"Trial by Fire"

The "Trial by Fire" Legend by C. Buckley

These five indigenous people, the Navajo, Chippewa, Dakota Sioux, Apache and Mequecito, are a symbol of all Native Americans asking "Who is Responsible?"

The fire represents western civilization and the smoke is the pollution (air, water and land) caused by our standard of living. The two pine trees remind us of our disappearing timber reserves, especially the rain forests of South America. The signs on the upper left hand border , bird and flying cross, indicate endangered wildlife.

The young man's unstrung bow portrays the near extinction of the American Bison. The red arrow is a reminder of the first space program, the Soviet Union's Sputnik, and all of the ramification of that event. The double cross was actually first used by Greek athletes and warriors (500 B.C.), Native Americans and of course the National Socialist Party of Germany. This brings into focus competition, war and destruction that have been present during our lifetime.
